Contracts and Measure Z Audit Report

At last week’s Beaumont Unified School Board meeting the board extended Dr. Latham’s contract through 2015 and extended all of her assistant superintendent’s contracts as well. I want to applaud the board on their decision to support Dr. Latham and to extend the contracts of her assistants as a team. I think the district and our kids will benefit from keeping a team together bringing continuity to the district’s leadership.

I want to thank the board for being more transparent this time around and not try to slip contract extensions and increases by the public.

Also at last week’s meeting the Measure Z Oversight Committee presented their annual audit and report. After their presentation I was allowed to ask a few questions. Neither the committee or the cabinet were able to answer my questions specifically but promised me they would get back to me with the answers.

Here were my questions:

1)      Were any funds for any non-Measure Z projects misapplied to Measure Z? If so, did this result in any adjustments?

2)      When will the district begin repaying the bond debt? For how many years? And, what will the estimated total payout be?

3)      The final Measure Z cost of the high school sports complex was reported to be just over $20 million. What was the original budget for the complex? And, how much over or under budget was the project?
