Almost 18 months ago, at Little Russo's, during our first meeting about the Beaumont Spirit Run, Steven Leach, Shari Scholte and I talked about establishing an educational foundation in Beaumont. That vision has become a reality. This weekend, a consultant we hired presented a Non-Profit Foundation workshop and afterwards we held our first formal executive board meeting.
I am also working with an attorney to incorporate and will soon begin the process of qualifying with the IRS to obtain 501c3 Non-Profit status. If all goes well, we hope to have the approval from the IRS by the end of the summer. I will keep you posted of our progress.
During our first meeting we accomplished the following:
- We approved the official name of the foundation, The Joan Abbott Educational Foundation
- We established three committees: The Beaumont Spirit Run Committee, The Joan Abbott Scholarship Fund Committee and a Marketing Committee
- We began planning the foundation's first official fundraising event, an Ice Cream Social to be held in July, 2011
A portion of the proceeds of the Ice Cream Social, will go to support the 2nd Annual Beaumont Spirit Run, scheduled for September 10, 2011 and will help us establish the scholarship fund.
During our workshop and meeting, two words kept coming up over and over, "Integrity and Transparency". We plan to demonstrate to our community what true transparency and integrity look like. We are developing a website that will provide a level of transparency not seen by many of our community's other organizations.
We have invited the students of Beaumont High School's technology department to submit to our board logos for consideration to be selected as our foundation's official logo. We will then select the best entries and post them on our website for a public poll. The results of the survey will help us determine our new logo. This logo will appear on our website and organization letterhead; it will be used for all correspondence and marketing materials.
I believe we have started something very special here and we are all very excited. This foundation will be a grass roots, community run, and community supported organization that will make a real difference in our kids' education. We will need, and welcome, support from the entire community to make this a lasting success. If you, or someone you know, would like to get involved, please let me know.
Here is our Mission:
The Joan Abbott Educational Foundation promotes and cultivates educational excellence in Beaumont area public schools through its independent support of innovative projects and programs; encouragement of community participation in sharing success at our schools; and contribution of resources that can further enhance the learning experiences of students.
Thank you Steve, Shari, David, Jason, Jacquie, Kim and Debi for helping making this a reality
