I just sent the letter below to Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Schools. If you also want to send an email here is the contact link: http://www.tomtorlakson.com/contact
Want to know what Mr. Torlakson thinks about parent involvement? Check out this video:
I am a parent in the Beaumont Unified School District. BUSD receives Title I money but is not compliant with Title I regulations. Title I regulations require districts receiving Title I funds to annually work with parents to develop a district wide policy and a plan to increase parent involvement.
After countless requests over the last few years to review and update the district policy, the board finally agreed last month to review the policy. Last week they approved the “new” policy. The board of education and the administration made no recommendations to change or update the policy and made no effort to include parents in the review. The district’s PI policy has remained static for the last four years.
BUSD’s policy, and Title I regulations, require the district to work with parents to develop a district wide plan to improve parent involvement and to annually review and monitor this plan. BUSD policy, and Title I regulations, require annual modifications to improve the effectiveness of plan. Our district refuses to work with parents to develop, review or modify a plan.
We need your help to encourage our board and administration to follow the law and their own policy. I am confident your involvement would convince the board and administration to do what is right. As I am sure you know, increased parent involvement can have a significant impact on our children’s educational success.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
